Tinting Grey Eyebrows and Lashes in Your 40s, 50s and 60s

At my beauty salon in Maghull, tinting grey eyebrows has become a quiet favourite with women in their forties and beyond. It usually starts with one silver hair you spot in the car mirror on the school run. Then a few more appear, and suddenly your brows look patchy or faded in photos. If that sounds familiar, you’re in good company.

I’ve been doing brows and lashes since I qualified at Hugh Baird College in 1999. So I’ve watched plenty of my regulars go through exactly this change. In this guide, I’ll explain honestly what a tint can do, what it can’t, and how I decide on shade and shape.

Why Grey Brow and Lash Hairs Change Your Whole Face

Brows frame the face, so even a little lost colour makes a big difference. When the hairs turn grey or white, they often blend into your skin. As a result, the brow can look thinner than it really is. Many women tell me they look tired, even after a good night’s sleep.

Lashes go the same way for some women. Pale tips make eyes look smaller, and mascara becomes a daily chore. However, the hairs themselves are usually still there. They’ve simply lost their colour, and that’s exactly where a tint helps.

What Tinting Grey Eyebrows Can Do

A brow tint darkens the hairs you already have. It also picks out the finer, lighter hairs you’d forgotten about. So the brow looks fuller and more structured, without drawing anything on. For lashes, the tint darkens each hair from root to tip, which makes them look longer and fuller without mascara.

The results are immediate, with no downtime. In practice, you can pop in on your lunch break and go straight back to work. An appointment takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on whether you have lashes, brows or both. I can also tint both in the same visit.

What a Tint Can’t Do

I’d rather be honest here than oversell it. A tint colours hair, but it can’t create hair where there isn’t any. So if part of your brow has thinned to bare skin, the tint won’t fill that gap. Instead, it makes the hairs around it show up more clearly, which often helps more than women expect.

Also, a tint doesn’t change texture. A wiry grey hair will still be wiry, just darker. And if your brows or lashes have thinned suddenly, please see your GP before you book. That’s worth checking first, rather than covering up.

Choosing a Shade for Tinting Grey Eyebrows

This is where experience really counts. I choose the shade by looking at your skin tone, your hair colour and what you like. For example, a woman who has gone softly silver all over rarely suits a harsh, dark brow. In that case, I’ll usually suggest a soft enhancement that looks like your own brows on a good day.

On the other hand, if you still colour your hair a rich brown, a more defined brow can balance it nicely. I’ll always talk it through before I start. Then I’ll adjust if you’d like it lighter or bolder next time. After all, your brows should suit the face you have now, not the one in your wedding photos.

One thing I’ll gently steer you away from is going too dark too soon. A brow that’s suddenly much darker can look severe against greying hair. So I’d rather start a touch softer and build up at your next visit. That way, nobody at the shops in Maghull wonders what you’ve done.

Your Patch Test Comes First

Before your first tint, you’ll need a patch test to check for any sensitivity. I’ll arrange it when you book, so it fits around your week. It’s a small step, but it matters. Even if you tinted years ago somewhere else, I still need that test before your first appointment with me.

If you react to the patch test, I won’t go ahead with the tint. That’s not the answer anyone wants. However, it’s far better than a sore, itchy eye the night before a family do in Formby.

Wiry Grey Brow Hairs and Eyebrow Waxing

Grey brow hairs rarely behave like the ones they replaced. In my experience, they tend to grow coarser and longer, and they stick out at odd angles. Because of that, a tint alone sometimes isn’t enough to make a brow look neat.

That’s where eyebrow waxing Liverpool helps. I tidy the stray hairs underneath and between the brows, so the shape looks clean and lifted. With regular sessions, waxing trains the brows, and many women find their appointments can spread further apart over time.

That said, I’m careful not to overdo it. In my experience, brows can thin a little over the years, so I’d never take away hair you’ll miss later. I also won’t wax over skin that’s broken or sore. Instead, I’ll tint and tidy lightly, then we can look again next time.

Pairing a Tint With a Wax

Most of my clients with grey brows book a tint and a wax together. It makes sense, because the tint shows me the true shape of the brow. Once I can see every hair, I can shape it much more precisely. As a result, you leave with brows that look both fuller and tidier.

If you’d like to understand the difference between the two, my piece on eyebrow tinting vs eyebrow waxing covers it in more detail. For lashes too, have a look at my eyelash and eyebrow tinting Liverpool page.

How Long It Lasts and When to Come Back

Results usually last two to four weeks. The exact time depends on your hair growth cycle and your skincare routine. So if your tint seems to fade quickly, tell me what you use at home and we’ll look at it together.

Regular appointments keep the colour and definition looking even. Many of my clients simply book their next tint before they leave. That’s handy before a holiday, because tinted lashes mean no mascara running down your face in the pool.

Seeing the Same Person Every Time

I’m the only therapist at the salon, so you’ll see me at every visit. As a result, I remember the shade we used last time and how your brows took it. In practice, that saves a lot of guesswork, especially as more grey comes through over the years.

The salon is at 3 Treeview Court in Maghull, easy to reach from Lydiate, Aintree and Crosby. If you’d like to book a patch test, call me on 0151 909 6116 or contact us online. Bring a photo of your brows from a few years ago if you have one, because it helps me see what we’re aiming for.
