Waxing on Your Period – Honest Advice for Intimate Waxing

At my beauty salon in Maghull, one text message comes up again and again. “My period has just started. Do I need to cancel?” Lots of women worry about waxing on your period, especially for an intimate wax. So let me answer it plainly, the way I would if you rang me.

The short answer is that you usually don’t need to cancel. That said, you might prefer to move your appointment, and that is completely fine too. Here is how I think about it after more than 25 years of waxing.

Can You Have an Intimate Wax During Your Period

Yes, in most cases you can. I treat women only, and I have waxed clients at every point in their cycle. Nothing about it shocks or embarrasses me. In fact, it is one of the most normal parts of my working week.

What matters is how you feel. Some women feel fine and want to keep their slot. Others feel crampy, bloated or simply not in the mood. Either choice is sensible, so there is no wrong answer here.

Why Your Skin May Feel More Sensitive

Many women notice their skin feels more sensitive around their period. As a result, a wax that usually feels quick and easy can feel sharper on those days. That is not a sign anything is wrong. It is simply how some bodies work.

I always test the wax temperature first, and I support the skin as the wax comes off. I use the Lycon waxing system, and I work steadily rather than rushing. So even on a more tender day, I do everything I can to keep you comfortable.

Tampons, Cups and What to Wear

If you decide to come in while waxing on your period, please wear a tampon or a menstrual cup. A pad gets in the way for intimate areas, so it isn’t practical for a Brazilian. Also, pop in with a fresh one if you can, and bring a spare in your bag.

The string from a tampon is not a problem. I simply tuck it out of the way while I work. Many clients tell me afterwards that they had worried far more about this than they needed to.

Hygiene, Discretion and Comfort

Hygiene matters to me on every single appointment, whatever the time of the month. I keep my treatment room clean and fresh for every client. In addition, you’re welcome to take a moment to freshen up before we start.

Discretion matters just as much. My salon is a calm, private room in Maghull, not a busy high street shop. Because I’m the only therapist here, nobody else walks in during your wax. So you can relax, and you never have to explain yourself to a stranger.

When I’d Suggest You Rebook Instead

You are always welcome to rebook if you’d rather not come in. Just ring me as early as you can, and we’ll find another slot. I know periods don’t arrive to a timetable, so I’m understanding about it.

Equally, there are times when I’d suggest moving the appointment myself. I won’t wax broken, sunburnt or sore skin, whatever the reason. Similarly, if you have a rash or irritation in the area, it’s kinder to wait. My Brazilian waxing Liverpool page explains what the treatment covers if you’re still deciding.

Why Many Women Book a Few Days After

Plenty of my regulars plan their wax for a few days after their period finishes. In practice, their skin tends to feel calmer then, and they feel more like themselves. It also means no tampons to think about. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with waxing on your period if the dates simply fall that way. It’s a matter of what feels right for you that month.

If your cycle is fairly regular, this is easy to plan. For example, some clients book their next wax before they leave and count forward on their phone calendar. Others text me a week ahead once they know their dates. Then we fit it around work shifts, the school run or a trip into Liverpool on Merseyrail.

Waxing on Your Period for the First Time

A first intimate wax can feel daunting enough without your period arriving the same week. If that’s you, it’s absolutely fine to rebook. However, if you’d like to keep it, I’ll take extra time to talk you through each step. My guide to your first intimate waxing appointment covers what happens from start to finish.

I’d also gently suggest a bikini line rather than a full Brazilian if you’re nervous. Then you can build up next time, once you know how your skin responds.

Pain Relief and Aftercare

Some women take their usual period pain relief before an appointment. If that suits you and you normally take it, that is your choice. However, please follow the packet and ask a pharmacist if you’re unsure.

Afterwards, wear loose, breathable underwear and avoid tight jeans for the rest of the day. Also, skip hot baths, the gym and swimming for a day or so. Keep the area clean, and change your tampon or cup as normal.

When to Speak to Your GP

Most period discomfort is normal, but some things deserve a proper check. If your periods are very heavy, very painful or have suddenly changed, please speak to your GP. The NHS guide to periods and period problems explains when to get advice. A wax can wait, so look after yourself first.
